WHO verifying North Korea's Covid-19 data amid outbreak: Report

According to a report released by the UN agency on Wednesday, the WHO is analyzing alleged Covid-19 data supplied by North Korea after the reclusive government shared similar information on its virus epidemic.

According to WHO's latest regional Covid-19 situation report, more than 1.62 million persons with fever and 23 deaths were reported to the organization between May 13 and 18.

The North has not provided case definitions for the figures, according to the report, and the agency is "currently in the process of validating Covid-19 data" from Pyongyang, according to Yonhap news agency.

It went on to say that there was no information in the country on Covid-19 vaccines.

According to the report, the organization's Southeast Asia Regional Director, Poonam Khetrapal Singh, wrote to the North Korean Ambassadors in Delhi on May 16 to offer cooperation in the country's battle against the disease.

After claiming to be virus-free for more than two years, the North verified its first instance of the Omicron variant of Covid on May 12.

Its official media has been releasing daily Covid-19 data, with over 115,000 new fever cases reported on Tuesday, bringing the total number of such instances to be almost three million since late April.
