Exploring the Efficacy of Mobile CBT-I in Treating Insomnia: A Real-World Study

Insomnia, a common sleep disorder, can be a challenging condition to manage. It can be short-term or chronic, and it can manifest as a primary problem or a symptom of an underlying issue. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a structured, evidence-based program that involves changing thought and behavioral patterns to treat chronic insomnia. A recent study explored the factors affecting the treatment prognosis of insomnia patients undergoing mobile CBT-I in combination with pharmacotherapy.

The Study

The study was conducted on the 'Good Sleep 365' platform with 1395 patients completing the online CBT treatment. The sample size of 339 was found to be sufficient for the study's research. Patients were assessed within a year and divided into remission, relapse, and recurrence groups. The study leveraged various evaluation questionnaires, such as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) scale. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS 21.0 statistical software.

Key Findings

According to the study, age and delayed onset time were protective factors for good treatment prognosis, while a low educational level and high GAD-7 scores were independent risk factors for a poor prognosis. The study demonstrated the potential of mobile CBT-I in treating insomnia by improving sleep efficiency, mood, and reducing daytime functional impairment caused by insomnia. There were no significant differences in gender among the three groups, but there were significant differences in age and onset time.

The Role of CBT-I in Insomnia Treatment

CBT-I is currently recommended as the first line of treatment for chronic insomnia. The technique focuses on psychoeducation, creating realistic sleep goals, and changing thoughts and behaviors about sleep. The use of mobile applications for CBT-I, such as Good Sleep 365 and Stellar Sleep, makes this therapy accessible and convenient for patients.
