US helps Estonia
An explosion started an Estonian artillery battalion’s major casualty scenario in their training area. American and Estonian military trained MASCAL scenarios in Tartu, Estonia, from May 22 to May 26.
15,000 Danes, Finns, Latvians, Poles, and Americans work on Hedgehog. Hedgehog provided self-help, ground evacuation, and mutual aid for Estonian fighting battalions in MASCAL scenarios.
EDF nurse Lt. Hele-Reet Lille said, “We have a common understanding with the U.S.” Cooperation promotes integration. I didn’t realize [U.S. Soldiers] weren’t Estonians in international teams.”
557th Medical Regiment Area To increase engagement, two support groups were developed. One evaluation team oversaw the Estonians while another blended with Estonian medical specialists at the transportable Role Two facility.
Andy DesOrmeaux was a trauma paramedic in Role Two. He praised the global team’s causation.

DesOremeaux enjoyed working with Estonians. I’ve seen trauma patients in the US treated similarly. Estonian nurses and doctors discussed trauma flow. We saved lives despite language barriers.
Global Health Engagement helps U.S. soldiers understand Estonian medical practices and join multinational teams. Hedgehog is vital for regional stability and security. GHE helps U.S. and Estonian soldiers accomplish NATO missions and respond to medical emergencies.
Estonian doctor Gustav Klimusev operated on U.S. soldiers during training. Kilmusev was able to describe a multi-cultural medical setting from his time in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Klimusev concluded that foreign trauma experience benefits doctors. More integration means higher NATO readiness.
Estonia is a great place for NATO allies and regional partners to conduct GHE initiatives. Hedgehog illustrates medical ties with Estonians.
