In response to ongoing rural healthcare challenges, Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse, Kansas, has announced its transition to a rural emergency hospital (REH). This decision comes in light of reimbursement changes, cost increases, governmental changes, and a decrease in the local population.

Transition to a Rural Emergency Hospital

The 25-bed-hospital, which once hosted an intermediate swing bed unit, will cease to provide long-term care services. This means the hospital will no longer offer inpatient services such as acute care and swing beds. Yet, the hospital remains committed to serving the community through a variety of essential healthcare services.

Despite the changes, the hospital will continue to operate its 24/7 emergency room and observation services, laboratory services, outpatient nursing care, physical therapy, radiology services, its wellness center, and the Rush County Medical Clinic. The hospital assures that these services will be maintained to provide critical care for patients in need of emergency medical attention.

Continued Services and Support

Additionally, Locust Grove Village will continue to provide nursing home services to the community. This ensures that long-term care patients will still have access to the necessary services they require, albeit from a different provider.

The transition to the REH model is supported by the American Hospital Association and is seen as a strategic move to secure the hospital's financial future while continuing to deliver essential healthcare services to the community.

Community Engagement and Discussion

In order to address any concerns and questions from the community, a town hall meeting has been scheduled for February 15. The meeting will further discuss the transition and what it means for the hospital and the community it serves.

This transition signifies a shift in the approach to healthcare in rural areas. While the hospital will focus more on providing emergency care and stabilization for patients, it will also work to transfer patients to larger facilities for further treatment if necessary.

With this change, Rush County Memorial Hospital aims to adapt to the changing healthcare landscape while ensuring the needs of the community are met. Despite the challenges, the hospital is committed to providing quality care and services to its patients, and this transition is a testament to that commitment.
