A Surge in Amputations Amid the Gaza Conflict

Advertisment

The ongoing war in Gaza has led to a substantial increase in life-altering amputations, impacting individuals across all age groups. Due to delayed medical attention, many have been unable to save their limbs, resulting in partial or complete amputations often carried out without adequate anesthesia and pain relief. The lack of treatment and skilled professionals has culminated in a scarcity of essential services like physiotherapy, rehabilitation, nursing care, nutrition, and mental health support. The heavy toll of the conflict on medical facilities in Gaza has made these services virtually nonexistent.

The Plight of Child Amputees in Gaza

Children in Gaza are suffering greatly with the increase in amputations. By November, over 1,000 children had undergone leg amputations, and this figure is expected to rise. These young amputees may require up to a dozen surgeries on the affected limb by the time they reach adulthood. Unfortunately, the lack of expert care, coupled with poor hygiene, medicine shortages, and a collapse of the main prosthetic limb center, has led to an unusually high rate of infected stumps and multiple amputations in comparison to other conflict zones. The situation has been so dire that some children, like Noor, face the risk of a second amputation.

Overwhelmed Health System and Unmet Medical Needs

The Gaza health system is overwhelmed, with more than 54,500 war-wounded individuals facing the gut-wrenching decision of losing a limb. The war has made reaching hospitals a life-risking endeavor due to the constant Israeli bombardment and ground combat. This lack of access to proper treatment has led to post-op infections and deaths, including a young girl who tragically succumbed to sepsis after failing to receive the necessary surgery. The World Health Organization and the Health Ministry in Gaza have reported that amputations have become commonplace, and there is a severe lack of vascular surgeons to respond to trauma injuries.

The Mental and Physical Challenges of New Amputees

Alongside the physical challenges, new amputees are grappling with the psychological impact of their loss. The lack of mental health support makes this process even more difficult. Non-governmental organization Project HOPE, along with partner organizations, is providing medical and mental health support amidst the severe humanitarian and health crisis. However, the dire living conditions, lack of essential resources, and slow arrival of aid continue to exacerbate the situation, particularly for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and newborns.

The Urgency of a Ceasefire and International Intervention

The ongoing violence has not only led to over 22,000 deaths and 57,000 injuries but has also sparked concerns about food insecurity and increased suffering among Gaza's population. The World Health Organization is collaborating with local partners to assess needs and provide supplies, but the situation demands more. Top officials, including the French foreign minister and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, have voiced concerns about the escalating conflict. The call for a ceasefire is now more urgent than ever to bring an end to the suffering and allow for the provision of much-needed health services.
