The hospital accused union leaders of breaking off talks to strike, appearing at the homes of some SSM Health leaders, and delaying negotiations. Meanwhile, the union argued that the hospital failed to communicate staffing and safety plans, rejected nurses' proposals, and actively recruited nurses to leave the union.

This was the second strike in four months at Saint Louis University Hospital, with the first strike occurring in September. Such repeated strikes underscore the tension and unresolved issues between the hospital management and the nurses.

The NNOC, a national union and professional organization for Registered Nurses (RNs), represents nearly 130,000 RNs in about 300 facilities throughout the nation. The union aims to improve workplace standards through collective bargaining and reform national healthcare legislation.

The NNOC has had several significant successes in recent times. For instance, registered nurses at University Medical Center in New Orleans voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining the NNOC/NNU with an 82% yes vote and over 90% turnout. The union has been instrumental in addressing issues such as short staffing and burnout among nurses.
