Romania will, from now onwards, publish COVID-19 cases as per weekly data rather than daily, as it has done since March 2020 during the start of the pandemic, according to Alexandru Rafila, the health minister of the country.

According to the minister, the decision was made because the number of COVID-19 cases as well as hospitalizations, and patients being admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) has drastically reduced in recent times, showing positive signs of recovery within the country.

The health ministry of Romania stated that the weekly report would be released on Mondays. Rafila responded to an inquiry from G4media.ro (a national news agency) by saying that the reporting could return to a daily frequency again if the COVID-19 scenario requires it.

"When we were talking about taking actions based on the development of the virus outbreak, monitoring of occupied hospital beds/intensive care beds due to the illness was deemed logical. We will, of course, return if the situation demands it. However, we hope that this won't be the case any time soon," said the nation's health minister.

Romania has recorded 2,912,878 COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began. Over the last 14 days, the overall incidence rate has been 0.14.
