Exact Sciences Awards Grants to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screenings and Healthcare Accessibility

Exact Sciences, a leading player in the healthcare sector, has been proactive in its efforts to tackle this issue. Through its FOCUS Program, it awarded $1.3 million to 23 organizations dedicated to improving colorectal cancer screening rates and boosting healthcare accessibility for medically underserved populations. Colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, becomes significantly more treatable if detected early. Yet, an estimated 60 million average risk adults remain unscreened in the country. The FOCUS Program has thus far awarded more than $2.9 million to 50 organizations nationwide.

Similarly, TOUCH, The Black Breast Cancer Alliance (TOUCHBBCA) has also made strides in this direction by partnering with the Bexa Equity Alliance (BEA). The partnership aims to introduce BEA's innovative screening technology into TOUCHBBCA's Black community through its 'For the Love of My Gurls' campaign. This initiative is particularly crucial as Black women face higher breast cancer mortality rates. The Bexa Breast Exam, a quick, accurate, and painless examination that does not involve radiation and provides immediate results, is part of this effort.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center & Cierra Sisters: Addressing Racism in Cancer Care

Another crucial partnership has been formed between the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the Cierra Sisters, a Seattle-based patient advocacy group. Together, they have produced a series of videos addressing racism in cancer research and care. With real stories, these videos aim to foster a no-tolerance policy for racism in all institutions and reach Black patients, caregivers, providers, policy makers, and clinical staff.

Color Health: Fostering Diversity in Cancer Survivorship Studies

Color Health is also partnering with an organization to improve cancer screening. The collaboration aims to develop inclusive study materials for a diverse cancer survivorship cohort by integrating a community engagement coordinator and health educator into the research team. This partnership is particularly important as racially and ethnically diverse populations are underrepresented in cancer survivorship studies.

Improving Access to Genetic Testing and Counseling

Further, the partnership between Color Health and an organization for cancer screening is working to enhance access to genetic testing and counseling for individuals at risk of hereditary cancer. By providing education, support, and resources for patients and healthcare providers, this collaboration ensures that genetic testing becomes an integral part of standard cancer care.

These partnerships highlight the concerted efforts being made to ensure cancer screening and early detection are accessible to all. By breaking down barriers to screening and increasing accessibility, we are moving closer to the ultimate goal of ending cancer.
