According to a statement from the President’s Media Division, Sri Lankan President- Gotabaya Rajapaksa has approved the transfer of 1.8 billion rupees from the COVID-19 Health and Societal Safety Fund to purchase vital pharmaceuticals (PMD).
The country’s currency deficit has disturbed the supply chain, resulting in a serious shortage of prescriptions, particularly life-saving and vital drugs.
In the year 2020, President Rajapaksa launched ITUKAMA, a fund to assist those afflicted by Covid-19. The fund had received over 1.8 billion rupees by the end of 2021, but only 197.5 million rupees had been spent from it.
During a meeting with health authorities on Friday, the president authorised relevant agencies to disburse the funds.
