Professor Kelvin Yeung Wai-kwok of the Department of orthopaedics and traumatology, school of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKU Med) has developed a non invasive technique to revive the bactericidal effects of conventional medicines in Multi Drug Resistance (MDR) Escherichia-coli (E.coli) associated deep tissue infections such as Urinary Tract and Peritoneal infections.

According to the study, when exposed to a low hyperthermic state, MDR E. coli becomes susceptible once again to the action of traditional antibiotics (approximately fifty degrees celsius).

As a result, the HKU Med researchers created a unique microwave responsive Microsphere enclosed with common antibiotics that may provide stable Hyperthermia Therapy as well as Antibiotic treatment at the same time. The findings were reported in Advanced Functional Materials.
