What is Frozen Shoulder and How is it Treated?

Introduction

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition in which the shoulder joint becomes painful and loses its range of motion. It seems to develop for no obvious reason but is more likely to occur in people who suffer from diabetes, stroke history, or high blood pressure.

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder

The most common symptom of frozen shoulder is a persistent, intense pain that radiates from the shoulder and arm. Movement of the shoulder may be accompanied by a noticeable grinding sensation. This condition gradually reduces the range of motion in the affected joint, making it difficult to do everyday tasks such as reaching for an item on a high shelf. Other symptoms that may occur include stiffness, aching, and loss of strength in the shoulder.

Causes of Frozen Shoulder

The exact cause of frozen shoulder is not known, but some risk factors can increase a person’s chances of developing the condition. These include a previous shoulder injury or surgery, repetitive shoulder strain due to an occupation, a medical condition such as diabetes, or something as simple as poor posture.

Treatments for Frozen Shoulder

The most common treatments for frozen shoulder are physical therapy and medications for managing the pain and inflammation. Gentle massage, moist heat treatments, and certain exercises help relax the muscles and stretched tight tissues. Surgical approaches, such as shoulder manipulation and arthroscopy, are sometimes needed in cases that do not respond to other treatments. Recovery time can vary from person to person depending on the severity of the condition.

The main treatment goal for frozen shoulder is to reduce pain and restore range of motion. By following the proper treatment plan and avoiding activities that could aggravate or worsen the condition, most people can recover from frozen shoulder and regain their full range of motion.
