Frontal Lobe Seizures: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

What is Frontal Lobe Seizure?

Frontal lobe seizures are a type of epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. These seizures typically stem from abnormal electrical activity in the frontal lobe, an area of the brain responsible for thought processes, behavior, memory, judgment and coordination. These seizures can cause different symptoms depending on which parts of the brain are affected.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of a frontal lobe seizure include altered consciousness, changes in behavior, speaking or speaking without making sense, difficulties with motor coordination, bizarre or involuntary movements and changes in the normal wake-sleep cycle. Additionally, people with frontal lobe seizures often experience disruptions in emotion and behavior, such as emotional swings and unusual changes in behavior.

Causes

The exact cause of frontal lobe seizures is unknown. However, they are generally thought to be caused by a disruption in electrical activity in the brain. Such disruptions can occur as a result of genetics, head trauma, tumors, infections, brain damage and other medical conditions. Additionally, some medications may also trigger these seizures.

Diagnosis

In order to diagnose frontal lobe seizures, doctors will usually perform a series of tests and imaging scans such as an EEG, or electroencephalogram, a test which monitors electrical activity in the brain, an MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, which can reveal any abnormalities in the brain, and a CT scan, or computed tomography, which provides detailed X-ray images of the brain. Additional blood tests may also be ordered to rule out other conditions such as infections and to determine whether any medications have been prescribed that may be triggering the seizures.

Treatments

The main treatment for frontal lobe epilepsy is anti-seizure medication, which can help reduce the number and severity of seizures. Additionally, other treatments may also be implemented, such as behavior therapy and dietary modifications. Surgery may also be recommended in some cases if the seizures cannot be managed with medications.

While frontal lobe seizures can be quite frightening, with the correct diagnosis, treatment and risk management strategies, people with this condition can lead normal, productive lives. It is important to talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have regarding your symptoms and to seek treatment as soon as possible.
