Covid-19 has tripled Portugal's mortality rate and increased hospitalizations by 27%, exceeding the European Union's threshold.

"An increasing pattern of Covid-19 hospitalization was seen, with 1,842 patients admitted on May 23 (+27 percent compared to the previous week)." This was validated in a report by Doctor Ricardo Jorge of the National Institute of Health (INSA) and the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

Hospitalizations climbed in all age categories over the previous week, according to the report, with demand for health care and mortality predicted to rise, especially among the most vulnerable persons due to the rising frequency of new illnesses.
