Prime Minister Hun Sen said yesterday that Cambodia will continue giving away Covid-19 vaccine until the coronavirus is eradicated.
Mr. Hun Sen said Cambodia is committed to providing free vaccines, though booster doses must be given every four months.
We don't know when Covid-19 will end. Booster shots are needed as long as the virus is present. The PM said this at the Royal School of Administration's graduation ceremony. The Premier has even rejected requests to charge for the vaccine.
"Fifth dose for frontline workers and seniors." Sixth-dose campaign starts in four months. Each person's immunity level is different, so we must keep vaccinating,â he said.
âWe're stocking up on vaccines to administer every four months,â he said.
The country has 11 million Covid-19 vaccine doses in stock, with 20 million more on the way.
âChina will distribute above 15 million doses, at the same time the US will deliver 5.5 million Pfizers and Australia 500,000,â he said.
Even those doses won't be enough between 2024 and 2026, the PM said. As long as the coronavirus is in Cambodia, the country must store 35 million vaccines annually.
Or Vandine, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health, said yesterday that she supports the Prime Minister's decision to provide free vaccines and to continue giving booster doses.
The decision will boost people's immunity and prevent the spread of Covid-19. The country's reopening to business and tourism will boost the economy, she said.
Som Sophan, 46, a diabetic homemaker in Chbar Ampov, said she should be cautious.
"I'm awaiting my fifth dose." I've had my fourth for three months. If more booster shots are given, she'll get them as Covid-19 protection.
Pheap Yna, a 17-year-old Boeng Trabek high school student, has already received four doses of the vaccine and is happy to receive more.
"If vaccines are free, people will come forward," she said. Vaccination rates will drop if the government charges a fee.
Since Thursday last week, 103,077 people have been vaccinated. 9,313,972 people received their third dose, while 2,659,787 got their fourth.
94.1 percent of Americans have at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, according to the 2019 Census.
