According to Norwegian health officials, the nation has an excess of COVID-19 vaccines and already disposed of over 137,000 doses of the drug as a result of dwindling requests in low-income countries.

If the global market does not shift, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health intends to dispose of additional doses. In Norway, vaccine coverage is massive, while global demand for charitable contributions has decreased.

"Since the beginning of the pandemic, this is the first time that the delivery of COVID-19 vaccine doses now surpasses the demand," the agency said, further stating that the situation is also applicable to most European Union nations. Norway is not a member of the European Union.

Norway has made a donation of more than 7.4 million doses to over 25 countries, primarily through the UN-backed COVAX scheme, but also through bilateral donations.

Earlier this month, Denmark's health authorities announced that 1.1 million extra COVID-19 vaccines would be thrown away because their expiry date was approaching. Also, efforts to offer them to developing nations had failed.

According to the Norwegian health organization, 93.1 percent of people over the age of 18 have obtained their first jab of a vaccine, with 90.7 percent receiving a second jab.
