There are two mutant Covid strains anticipated to become prevalent in Ireland, with one top doctor warning of the possibility of previously infected people getting infected again.

The rise in the count of hospitalized patients was cause for concern, according to Dr. Colm Henry, the chief clinical officer of the HSE.

He further warned that individuals may still be reinfected with either Omicron BA.4 or Omicron BA.5 sub-variants due to their capability to bypass immunity.

The warning is coming on the heels of a steep rise in Covid-19 hospitalization which has now hit 453 on Monday. Out of this figure, 22 are in intensive care.

On Sunday, 12th June, there were 397 hospital admissions, a growth of 171% from two weeks prior when Covid-19 infections peaked on May 28 with just 167 hospitalizations.

Out of every 4 persons that took the Covid-19 test on Monday, 1 came back positive representing a 25.4% positivity rate.
