RCN Members Accept Pay Rise

Advertisment

Members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) on the Isle of Man have accepted a 6% pay deal for 2023-24 from the island's health service operator, Manx Care. This resolution comes after a prolonged dispute over pay and conditions, which was resolved in November. A significant majority, over 75% of RCN members who participated in the voting, supported the pay deal, marking a turning point in the lengthy negotiations.

Details of the Pay Deal

The pay deal will only be implemented once all the unions have reported their results and if the majority have accepted. Manx Care, as the island's health service operator, has been at the center of this pay deal, which has been under discussion for a considerable period. The deal's acceptance by the RCN members is seen as a significant step towards resolving the long-standing issue.

Concerns Over Back-Pay

Despite the acceptance of the pay deal, the RCN has raised concerns about the offer not including back-pay for staff who have left the health care body since April 2023. An appeals process for individual cases has been set up by Manx Care to address this issue. The RCN has encouraged those individuals who left Manx Care before the offer was made to submit an appeal for consideration.

Other Unions Yet to Decide

Advertisment

While the RCN members have accepted the pay deal, other unions are still in the process of making a decision on the offer. The final implementation of the pay deal will be dependent on the majority of the unions accepting the offer.

Previous Disputes

Last year, the RCN's dispute with Manx Care led to two days of strike action by nurses on the island. This new agreement signals a positive shift in the relationship between the RCN and Manx Care, and it is hoped that similar disputes can be avoided in the future.

Impact on Health Service

This pay deal is expected to have a significant impact on the health service on the Isle of Man. By addressing the pay concerns of nursing staff, Manx Care aims to ensure the provision of high-quality healthcare services to the island's residents. The resolution also provides a platform for improved relations between health service operators and staff unions, which could lead to enhanced job satisfaction and staff retention in the long run.
