The spiral scam was recently exposed by a DR docuseries, which showed that from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, Women and girls from Greenland had preventative spirals placed against their will and sometimes without their knowledge.

Greenland however has opted to form its investigation panel to examine the spiral controversy as part of a larger investigation into whether Denmark followed the UN anti-colonization criteria in the years running up to 1953.

In 1991, Greenland gained back control of all its health policy and administration from Denmark. The Danish Ministry of Health's inquiry will focus on the years from the 1970s to 1991. In the 1970s, the spiral method results in a roughly 50% decline in the rate of kids born in Greenland.
