The coronavirus has killed 40,679 Dutch residents since it first appeared there. This is according to the CBS, which obtained these numbers from the government-issued sources of death certificates. The RIVM received considerably fewer reports than the real count of Covid-19 mortalities. Its Covid dashboard logged 22,324 fatalities.

Source of death notifications frequently come later than the municipality’s notification that somebody is no longer alive. However, due to the fact that several data sets have been examined and assessed separately, it is difficult to pinpoint which variables are largely responsible for the latest mortality rates. Thursday’s numbers showed that CBS still had higher death rates in May, although by a smaller margin than that of April.

Excess mortality is a term used to describe the occurrence of more fatalities than were anticipated for the season on the basis of past data. Residents of nursing homes, for example, accounted for about 700 additional deaths in May after long-term treatment. However, May’s mortality rate was also generally high regardless of age. However, the total fatalities decreased within the possible fluctuations.

As of April, the fatality rate was significantly higher. Every week, on average 400 more individuals passed on than the regular figure. Researchers had insufficient data at the time to elucidate the higher mortality but considered the higher death may have a link with the flu and coronavirus epidemic prevalent that period. On May 25, the RIVM announced that the flu upsurge had ended.

The May figures from CBS revealed that the excess mortality disappeared in the final week of May. It was only present in the initial three weeks.
