Despite the early diagnosis of HFMD, the health director-general, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, indicated that two samples from the three-year-old were sent to the National Public Health Laboratory (MKAK) for additional testing, which included HFMD and monkeypox.

"The Coxsackie A16 virus was proved to be positive, demonstrating that this is a case of HFMD," the study says.

"The toddler tested negative for monkeypox and other infections," he said on Facebook today.

On Tuesday, the health ministry said it had received no information on claims that a child had been sick with monkeypox.

It was in response to a viral photo of a little boy with large blisters on his hands that appeared to be the result of monkeypox.
