The researchers aimed to develop a therapy using deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes within the central lateral (CL) thalamic nuclei and the related medial dorsal tegmental (CL/DTTm) tract. The study is a phase 1, randomized feasibility study and has been referenced in the journal Nature Medicine.

The research involved a small group of participants who underwent surgery for deep brain stimulation. The results showed promising improvements in executive control and processing speed on the trail making test, suggesting that deep brain stimulation can be safely applied and may improve executive control in patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury in the chronic phase of recovery.

According to the study, the participants showed significant improvements in cognition and quality of life after receiving the experimental form of deep brain stimulation. Notably, they scored higher on a standard test of executive function after three months of treatment.
